The Orca Novel 12 Day Challenge
Culminating Task

Introduction: Each student will have 12 opportunities at the start of class to read an Orca novel of his/ her choice. Students who complete their novels BEFORE the 12 days expires will be required to find another novel to read. This assignment is a course requirement, and totals 15% of the students’ final grade in the course.

There are two major components to this challenge:

MOVIE TRAILER MADNESS
ï      Students will be creating a mini “Movie Trailer” for their Orca novel using new Photostory software. We will be learning the skills we need, and acquiring the components over a series of several mini lessons in the library. Students who miss these tutorial opportunities will be required to work on their movie trailers outside of class. Mrs.Anderson, Ms.Burns and Kimberly are evaluating students daily on their work habits. Absent students will receive a zero for that day. Movie trailers will incorporate the following requirements:

________ title slide (title of novel, author, image that depicts main message of novel, your name)
*________ pictures
*________ captions
________ voiceovers
________ sound effects
________ music
________ “fancy extras”
*include components of:
-plot (WITHOUT giving away the ending!)
-central conflicts and resolution
-symbols
-theme
-characters
BONUS: include a quote (cite it with a page number in brackets!)

NOTEStudents who consistently demonstrate the maturity, ability and responsibility to work in a small group will be permitted to do so. These students will read the same novel. Students who do not regularly attend, complete their mini lesson tasks, or contribute to their small group will promptly be removed at the discretion of the teacher. A student will be given one warning, then will have to work individually if the behaviour persists. The requirements will be adjusted for small groups. Students unable to work with the class in the library, or complete the assignment will be given alternate writing assignments to complete at a separate location.

WRITING

ï     Students will individually complete small writing assignments to prepare for their mini tutorials. Topics may include: possible novel ‘theme music’, a slogan for the novel, possible stars to play the main characters, possible sound effects, some adjectives to describe the characters, picture drawing/sketching, a ‘selling line’ for the ‘film’, a movie buff quote for the ‘film’, Top 10 lists, etc. These will be marked daily, and students will keep these for their Movie Trailers.

ï      Students will be learning and practicing a core Literacy Test writing skill, the newspaper report, and will be writing two 150+ word newspaper articles based on events in their Orca novels. We will write one report on day 6, and the second report on day 12. Every article must have a rough copy that has been heavily edited and revised. Unedited writing will not be evaluated. Reports will include:

R                        a headline
R                        a byline
R                        a placeline
R                        a lead (5 Ws + H) and a body (including the interviews and expanding on
              the 5 Ws and H)
R                        3 interviews with participants, bystanders or experts
R                        a picture
R                        Bonus: include any other newspaper requirements learned in class for up to 5 bonus marks! (ex: subheading, caption, masthead, etc.)
