Pre-Reading:
1. Add the following term to your GLOSSARY:

2. When you form opinions or impressions about people when you first meet, what kinds of things do you consider? (Their looks, clothing, where they are, what they’re doing, etc?)
 
3. What do you think people consider about you when they first meet you and form an impression?                              
 
4. Identify a symbol or sign that you feel could represent your identity.
 
 
5. Is there a personal motto, saying or mantra that you feel represents you and your life? If not, choose or create one now. For example, Mr.Nevin’s is “Carpe Diem”, which means ‘seize the day’.

Post-Reading:
Answer the following questions in full sentences in your notebook:
 
1. What are the conflicts in the story? List them by type (person vs. person) and by characters involved (Mary vs. Sarah).
 
2. Why do you think Evan Hunter wrote this story? What is his main message, or the lesson / theme of the story?                  
 
3. What is the police officer’s reaction to Andy? How does this contribute to the author’s message?
 
4. What effect does labeling or stereotyping have on others? What positive alternatives can you suggest to respond more receptively to others?
 
5. Why do teens choose to be involved in a gang like the Royals? Justify your reasons.

Writing:
 
The focus of this writing is autobiographical (auto+’self’ / biographical = ‘life story’). The intention is to explore components of yourself as part of the past, the present, and the future. Learning from mistakes and triumphs, for wining and losing, all takes courage. We can also learn from the experiences of others; that is why we read literature. Stories, film, poetry all relate to us because of the similarity in all people, no matter how strange or exotic the setting many be.
 
Write on any ONE of the following, in at least 200 words. Try to describe the feelings and thoughts in the following memories.
 
Journal Part A: The Past
 
A1. What was your favorite toy as a child? How did you get it and what happened to it?
 
A2. Describe your most memorable birthday.
 
A3. Did you/ do you have a special pet? How does it fit into your ‘family’?
 
A4. Is there a special Christmas, different form all the rest?
