Tom Finder: Culminating Task
For the Tom Finder novel study, there will only be one major assignment. As a result, this assignment is compulsory. All of your points must be completed in rough for marks by ________________ and the good copies must be completed by _____________________.
This deadline is final and late assignments will not be accepted for any reason.
Read over the following list of assignments and choose enough tasks to total 100 marks. If you would like to earn bonus marks, you may choose up to 120 marks worth of assignments. All written assignments must have a rough draft (with evidence of revision) and a polished copy. Incomplete assignments will not be accepted
You will be given portions of time in class to complete this assignment, although you will need to complete it on your own time. The library will be booked for _____ days to complete the good copies.
DETAILS: Submit your assignments in one package by the due date with a title page. On the title page (which already includes: title, your name, my name, course code: ENG2P1), include a summary with the following information: 1) which assignments you have completed, 2) the mark value for each, 3)the total mark value of the tasks you are submitting.
10 MARKS
1. Choose a chapter from the novel and in point form, and list the top ten events that occur in that chapter. Rank the events 1-10 (1 is most important, 10 is least important) and then explain why you ranked #1 and #10 the way you did.
(You can turn this into a 20 mark assignment by adding a symbolic picture next to each plot point)
2. Find a newspaper article that relates to the same themes as Tom Finder. In a paragraph of 75 words, explain the connection between the article and novel.

3. Is Tom Finder a novel of hope or despair? Explain using what happens at the end of the novel. (Hint: think about Tom, Jeans, Pam, Janice, Samuel and Daniel) Was it what you expected? Explain. (your answer should be at least 75 words)
4. Create a crossword puzzle of 20 important questions to help you prepare for the exam. Use a program online to complete it. It will be distributed to the class for review. Choose your words carefully, and include an answer key.
15 MARKS
4.5 Tom finds a cell phone and he decides to text message Pam. She replies to his messages. What would their “conversation” look like? You should have at least 30 messages between Tom and Pam. Make sure you use proper text language.
5. List 7 characters from the novel and for each character give a four point character trait description of them (not physical attributes). One of the points you include should deal with the significance of the character in the novel. Use a thesaurus!

6. Find 8 words in the novel that you are unfamiliar with. List the words, and after finding a dictionary definition for each one, put it into your own words. Include the page # where the word was found.
20 MARKS
7. Tom decides to make a mixed CD that symbolizes his life on the street from the time of his arrival until the time he regains his memory. What 10 songs would he choose, what is the song about and how does it connect to Tom’s life? Find, in the songs, at least 4 specific lyrics that show your point (make sure the songs are appropriate for a school project) and explain.
8) Tom decides to write an article for the Newspaperman about his life on the streets. Choose an incident that occurred while Tom didn’t have his memory and write an article. Remember to follow the correct form (interviews, third person). Approximately 200 words.

9) Compose an e-mail to Martine Leavitt (min. 200 words) expressing your opinion of the novel Tom Finder. Comment on what you enjoyed about it, what your favorite parts were and what lessons you learned from the novel. Proper letter form is needed. BONUS if sent.
10. The movie Bourne Identity centers around a man who has lost his memory. Write a brief report (200 words) that compares the movie to the novel. How are the characters similar and how are they different? How do the characters lose their memories, deal with their amnesia and regain their memory?
11. Find a movie review of the Bourne Identity on the internet and comment on your opinion of the review. Your response to the movie review must be at least 150 words. Do you agree or disagree with the reviewer’s comments? Why? Make reference to his/her comments in your response. Please include a copy of the movie review with your written assignment.
25 MARKS
12. Listen to Ms. Sargeant’s podcast of Tom Finder on boysread.com and then do your own based on your opinion of the novel. You must have a script to read from, and choose appropriate background music/effects. If your podcast is very good, it could be posted on the website! Consider reading a chapter, or significant event dramatically and include sound effects, or create a radio advertisement, or interview. Talk to me about this one to make sure you’re on the right track.
13. Design a billboard that will help Tom re-connect with his parents. It must be the size of a full sheet of Bristol board. Include appropriate text, colour and images. Remember, if you have to pay over $5000.00 for the billboard, you’re going to want it to look good! Include a report (100 words) that explains why the components of your billboard are so effective.
14. Create a Tom Finder crossword puzzle that is based on the entire novel. You must also provide an answer key. We will be doing this puzzle as a class to make sure that it is the proper level of difficulty for a grade 10 class. At least 40 questions required.
30 MARKS
15. Design a new book cover for the novel. Make sure you include at least 8 pictures that clearly connect to the novel. (ie: notebook, Mozart, streets, river etc.) Try not to just show the plot; use symbols, colour and text. Write a report of 100 words that explains why your new book cover is better than the old one.
16. Draw a map of the Core and mark 7 spots that are significant in the novel. In a chart, comment on the 7 places you chose and why they are significant. Your map must be in colour and 3D images are encouraged.
17. Tom keeps a journal in order to remember his life. Keep a journal for 10 days (they don’t need to be consecutive) about your life, ideas and interests. Each entry should be at least 1/3 page. Make it look authentic, and be honest in your reflections.
40 MARKS
18. Find 25 pictures (photos, magazine pictures, images from the internet) that connect to Tom Finder. Display them on a piece of Bristol board with proper captions that explain how the photo connects to the novel. Avoid simple plot recap; extend to symbolic and thematic images. Add 10 marks by doing a 3 minute presentation to the class explaining these connections.
19. Create a Tom Finder game that connects to the novel’s themes. It must have playing pieces, questions about the novel (include the answers) and a board that relates to the novel. As a class, we will play the game so make sure it is the proper level of difficulty for a grade 10 class.
50 MARKS
20. Create a Tom Finder Photostory with at least 30 pictures that correspond to the novel, and at least 5 key quotes. Include other text as well, and make sure you set your slide show to appropriate music.
21. Create a 15 page scrapbook of Tom’s life on the street. You need to include pictures, captions, momentos, short journals, etc. Be creative!
If you have a particular talent (music, drama, artistic, computer etc.) that you would like to utilize for this assignment, see me with an idea. ENJOY the choices, and do your best!
