Whirligig Novel Study
**Individual due dates noted**
Students will complete various tasks of their individual choice which may reflect their Learning Styles, although they may choose from outside of their strengths as well. Students must complete activities that are of different point values, but they MUST add up to 15 points. As always in the writing process, there must be evidence of planning/drafts, revision and final drafts. All drafts/plans must be initialled by the teacher during a mini conference. Students will explain their learning for teacher evaluation. Submit this handout with your final products. Enjoy!
Activities worth 4 points

4.1 Write a television show, play, puppet show, role play or song using a word from the story as your main theme. Teacher’s initials:
4.2Write an alternative ending to the story you read. Minimum of 2 pages, double spaced. Maintain the key elements of the story, including characterization. Explain your choices. Teacher’s initials:

4.8 Do an independent study of a major theme from the story (2 pages, typed, double spaced). Teacher’s initials:
4.9 Write the personal journal of one of the characters by ‘getting into their head’ and showing their thinking at any time before, during or after the story takes place. Use the text as a starting point. Make the journals look authentic! Hint: consider diction. Teacher’s initials:

4.10 Look for an environmental issue from the story and discuss it in relation to real life and your personal experiences. Teacher’s initials:

4.11 Identify a problem/conflict in the story. Decide if you agree or disagree with the manner in which the character handled their problem in the story. Find supporting evidence from the story (min. 3) and from your own personal experience to justify your decision. Teacher’s initials:

3.1 Write a newspaper advertisement using words from the text trying to sell a product. Use a minimum of 3 new or unfamiliar words from the text. Teacher’s initials:

3.2 Imagine that the main character in your story has risen to fame. Now they find themselves on the cover of the latest issue of a magazine. Design the magazine cover. Teacher’s initials:

3.3 Create a soundtrack for the novel. For every chapter, choose an existing song to represent it, and compile a song list from these. Explain your choices, making reference to specific examples of sound, mood and lyrics. Teacher’s initials:

3.4 Create a tableaux of the climax from the story. Present it to the class, then orally discuss the climax of the story. Teacher’s initials:

3.5 You are a reporter at a press conference. Prepare a list of 10 questions to use at a press conference about the problem or conflict in the story. Bonus: lead the class in discussing these questions! Teacher’s initials:

3.6 Write an autobiography of the main character in the story (1 – ½ pages, typed, double spaced). Teacher’s initials:

3.8 Write to a person or a company with a solution to a problem in the story using proper letter writing format (1 full page). Teacher’s initials:

3.9 Role play with a partner and conduct a survey with 5 questions of your character’s likes and dislikes. Graph the results between your character and your partner’s character. Survey 5 other students in the class on their opinions of likes and dislikes of your character. Create a labelled graph to depict the results. Teacher’s initials:
